Winter Fashion: Beautiful Bows Everywhere

--By Kim Moshtaghi

Eliza J Ruffle Wrap Dress
Eliza J Ruffle Wrap Dress

$158.00
Available at: nordstrom.com

Most of my friends and family know I’m not a big fan of anything with bows... but they’re everywhere! So, I had to start concentrating on what I like about this trend, instead of my fear of its overly girly look. When I dug deeper into my psyche I realized it wasn’t necessarily the bow on a dress I hated, but the association I had in my head with my childhood puffy and itchy bow dresses my mom made me wear to functions, despite my tantrums. These dresses were so uncomfortable that my hatred of bows has lingered for twenty years. Now that I got that off my chest, I want to reveal to all of you that I have talked myself out of this bow-hate and want to share some of my new found love of this whimsical and flirty style trend.

Nordstrom really has a great selection of dresses with a perfect placement of the bow, but I also found some fun accessories that incorporate the bow and are easy to wear for a starter girl like me.

Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Organza and Taffeta Dress
Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Dress

$178.00
Available at: nordstrom.com
icon

My first pick is a gorgeous blue Eliza J. Ruffle Wrap Dress. I love the color and the wrap styling of this dress. Wrap dresses always make a woman’s body look so sexy and flirty, and this dress perfectly flows around most female problem areas. The ruffles frame the neck and cascade all the way down, and the bow adorns the waistline beautifully.

My next choice is a Suzi Chin Maggy Boutique Organza & Taffeta dress-- one of my favorites. This looks like something you would see worn in the show Mad Men, which I love! This is a faux two-piece dress, and it’s just stunning. The skirt has a big bow at the front of the waist, but it doesn’t look overbearing because of the way it’s structured. This dress is feminine and perfect for a classy event. I would definitely wear some killer pointy heels with this outfit and some great bright red lipstick.

Continuing my bow extravaganza, I chose some sizzling Sheer Bow Back Tights from Bebe, which feature a bow-tie pattern imprint on the back of the calf. I love these tights! I think they are very sexy and can be worn with almost anything to give the outfit an edge.

Bebe Rhinestone Bow Brooch
Rhinestone Bow Brooch

$39.00
Available at: bebe.com

If you need to spice up a look with something, but still aren’t convinced bows are for you, try the Rhinestone Bow Brooch from Bebe. It is a cute, blinged out accessory that can be added to the corner of a shawl or cardigan. This brooch is adorable and can be used in many creative ways without taking over your entire look.

As long as your not rolling out with a big bow on the side of you head, I’m starting to like the trend. But, if you start wearing bow earrings, a dress with a bow, and a bow brooch with your shawl at the same time, it might be time for you to invest in some dolls and dress them up with overwhelming bows. Keep it realistic for the sake of all the bystanders.

Leifsdottir Women's Fine Gauge Rosebud Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater
Leifsdottir Rosebud Cashmere Sweater

$172.80 (was $288- save 40%!)

Generally speaking, I pretty much love anything cashmere. That love turns to outright infatuation when a label manages to twist luscious cashmere into something truly unique and fashion-forward. Like this super sale priced Rosebud Cashmere Sweater from funky new label on the block Leifsdottir.

When I think cashmere, I typically dream up softly slouchy sweaters. But, this sweater is different. The inventive designers at Leifsdottir have managed to make cashmere sculptural-- a feat of fabric engineering rarely seen at department store prices. Perfect for work or play, and made much more fabulous by a sale price marked 40% off retail.

SALE: Oh Deer! Passion Boots

Oh Deer! Passion Black Boots
Oh Deer! Passion Boots

$51.76
Available at: overstock.com
icon

As I'm writing this I'm preparing for an overnight trip to Boston-- no easy feat when you live in the San Francisco bay area. But, the hardest part of this quickie trip is not the crazy schedule, it's the packing. Funny thing about being a California girl, I get totally thrown by any situation that requires socks. I kid you not. Except for my workout sneakers, I don't own a pair of shoes that work with socks. I think I've cooked up a reasonably stylish alternative. I'll let you know how it works out.

In the meantime, I'm starting to think that I should probably invest in at least one pair of winter boots. I try not to visit places that get real weather during the winter, but these trips keep popping up. I need warm boots, and I think these Oh Deer! Passion Boots would be perfect. I feel warmer just looking at them.

Click on the photo to link directly to where you can purchase the Oh Deer! Passion Boot online and on sale. And yes, they are marked down. Silly Overstock.com no longer posts the retail prices for their deals. But, rest assured, $51.76 is a great price for Oh Deer! boots.

Gift This: Glam Glossies for All

New York Magazine

$19.97 (cover price $161.50-- save 87%!)
Available at: magazines.com

Who: any semi-literate person on your gift list

What: a glam glossy picked just for him or her

Why: I know, in the age of iPhone, FaceBook and TiVo, there is little need for conventional magazines. But, I still love me a good glossy. There's something about the gorgeous photography, the professionally edited stories and heft of the pages on my lap that stimulates a part of my brain that electronic toys just can't. And I like to share the feeling.

Without fail, a few people on my gift list will receive 12 fun months of a glammy glossy magazine. It's a gift that gives all year long and, if chosen well, can both compliment the giftee's style and reflect on the gifter's good taste. Oh, and did I mention that magazine subscriptions are insanely affordable?

So, with the hundreds of mainstream magazines to chose from, what to gift? I like to stick to the entertaining, if slightly frivolous titles for gifting. Yes, The Economist is a fab magazine, but it's also kind of like getting a textbook in your Christmas stocking. A few of my favorite glossies for gifting are below, but this is the kind of gift that can really be tailored to each individual so be creative.

For the Ladies:
Lucky for the shopaholic. Vogue for the slave to style. Elle for the jet set fashionista. Town & Country for the socialite.

For the Teen Girl:
Nylon for the late-teens trendsetter. Seventeen for the early-teens pop princess. Teen Vogue for the fashionista-in-training.

For the Guys:
GQ or Details for the pop culture guy. Esquire for the guy with brains and beauty. Men's Health for the guy interested in strong mind and body.

For the Teen Boy:
Sports Illustrated for the jock. Blender for the music obsessed. Motor Trend for the car kid.

For All:
Vanity Fair for pop culture meets real journalism. Bon Appetit for the foodie. New York Magazine for the city sophisticate. Robb Report for the luxe-a-holic. Rolling Stone for the music lover. New Yorker for art, culture and politics. Travel+Leisure for the world traveler.

Click through any linked text to link directly to where you can purchase a subscription to that magazine online and up to 85% off cover price, shipping included.

It's the time of year to dress up. Not just your Sunday best, little cocktail number, but holiday gear to the nines and ladies, let me tell ya, you need great hair to highlight the whole look. Recently in my office for example, one co-worker caved in and got the trendy bang cut... what do you know, now I have them along with two others! We always get compliments on our hair first, outfit second if it ever overcomes the fabulous fringe.

So my advice for anytime is to have the right tools and make your hair beautiful everyday! Look into the newest product from Sedu, Revolution Professional Nano Tourmaline Ionic Styler. Depending on the evening, this unique item can turn your locks into a straight, curled or waved look to compliment any outfit. Sedu's research has led them to be on top of technology by the styler producing a moisturizing heat that doesn't further break dry winter hair. Once you purchase this product and enjoy it for yourself, give the same to a loved one! For a mere $139, you and your friends can have salon hair for upcoming parties, everyday errands, and just looking fabulous. Sedu for you and yours, google now before its gone!
